エタノールは環境に優しいクリーンなエネルギーと考えられているが、もし米国の車がガソリンの代わりにエタノールで走るようになると呼吸器系が原因で死亡したり入院したりするヒトが増えるだろう。スタンフォード大学の大気学者Mark Z. JacobsonがEnvironmental Science & Technologyの4月18日オンライン版に発表した。
コンピューターモデルによる計算で、2020年にエタノール車が増えるとベンゼンやブタジエン濃度は減るがホルムアルデヒドとアセトアルデヒドが増え、オゾンが増えるとしている。死亡増加はオゾンによるものである。
