アルファリノレン酸（ALA）とリノレン酸（LA）が子どもの成長や発育に必要であることは認められる。しかしEUのこどもたちが必要量のALAとLAを摂れていないということはなく、推奨されているバランスの取れた食生活で摂れる量のALAとLAをさらに摂ることの利益はない。
