50年前の今日は、喫煙による恐ろしい流行を認識し逆戻りさせる転換点だった。
喫煙ががんの原因であることを明確にした公衆衛生局長官の喫煙と健康についての最初の報告書が1964年1月11日に発表された。今や我々は喫煙は喫煙者だけでなく受動喫煙者にとっても他の多様な病気の原因であることを知っている。また喫煙の依存性についても学んだ。我々はこの50年で大いに前進したがまだやらねばならない。煙草は米国と世界で予防可能な死亡原因の単独の主要原因で有り続けている。
