屋内環境に存在する可能性のある物質にあてはまる各種法律やガイドライン、条例は各種あり、RIVMはそれを調べた。建材、表面塗装、床材、電気製品、家具、衣服、おもちゃ、エアフレッシュナー、洗剤、タバコ製品など多様なものに由来する化合物が建物の中に存在する可能性がある。特定のものについては規制があるが屋内空気の物質の濃度や暴露に対する規制はほぼない。
