アイルランドの近代史の決定的出来事である1840年代の大飢饉は、何百万人もの餓死や移住の原因となり大英帝国からの独立戦争につながった。150年前の乾燥葉から、この惨劇をもたらした微生物の遺伝子配列が決定された。
卵菌の一種であるPhytophthora infestansは、1845年の夏ベルギーのアントワープ港に、病気になったジャガイモによって運ばれた。アイルランドが他の国より影響が大きかったのはジャガイモ依存度が高かったためである

妊娠最初の三ヶ月の1040人の尿中ヨウ素濃度と子どもが8才の時点でのIQと9才の時の読み能力を調べた。ヨウ素とクレアチニン比が150 μg/gより少ない女性の子どもの言語IQ、読み能力が低い可能性が高かった。英国妊娠女性のヨウ素欠乏は重大な公衆衛生問題であろう。
